Importing scans in to Photoshop?

What format is best to scan images in for importing into Photoshop? I thought it was .tif (I can scan to tif, jpeg %26 pdf at work).

Thanks!

I recommend you scan to TIF format at the highest quality that's practical for you (taking your disk space and time into consideration). The better your initial file quality the better results you're going to have in Photoshop.

General rule of thumb with scanning is to scan at the highest resolution and quality you can and scale down as needed. You can always reduce the size and quality of a large scan --but you can't scale a small, poor quality scan up.

Why TIF?

TIFs don't compress image data like JPEGs --everything your scanner is capable of pulling from your source image will be in the TIF and that means more to work with in Photoshop.

PDFs are great when you're ready to go to print --but they're not a format Photoshop will edit directly. Scan directly to PDF only when you don't plan to do any graphic work to the file (like scanning a letter to email someone)

JPG/JPEG. best for editing in photoshop
if youre planning to make a small file try jpg and pdf. jpg might make a compromise on quality so i would go with pdf.

but if youre planning to make touchups on your scans (ie photoshop) then i would stick with jpg or tif.

pdf is the easiest to just scan and print
