Photoshop CS3 sloooowww and startup disk error?

okay so heres the deal...when I am using photoshop cs3 it takes FOREVER to apply filters...rename things...and just generally do anything related to photo editing. I have a Macbook PRO with 100+Gb free on my hard disk with 2 gb of ram...I have emptied my trash...closed all the other programs except P.S. and the systems slows down. And today i got a message saying my startup disk was almost full...uhumm help?

Im not too familiar with computer workings so yeah...and if you are just going to say 'throw out the MAC' shut up and don't bother replying thanks :)

The scratch disks answer is the first thing I would check. in Photoshop, go to the menu bar, select: photoshop%26gt;preferences%26gt;perfomance this will give you a dialog that allows you to check wich disks you want (if you've partitioned them, or have an external hardrive connected to your laptop, etc) as well as how much ram can your work take up, etc. Play with these options.

However I suspect there is a larger picture a play (literally and figuratively).

#1 Are your files (PSDs, or RAWs, or whatever the pic is) large? Over 100 mb will drag any system down some, but over 1 gig is a killer. However, I understand that these file sizes are an evil necessary in many cases, but you need to understand that it will affect performance all the way around.
